GERBER TECHNOLOGY OPENS CUTTER ASSEMBLY CENTER
IN SHANGHAI, CHINA

Begins mass production of XLc7000, First Cutter Manufactured in China

14 July 2006

Connecticut, USA – In June, Gerber Technology held a ceremony celebrating the opening of its Cutter Assembly Center in Shanghai, China with its partner, Shanghai Machine Tool Works Ltd. (SMTW). Gerber displayed the GERBERcutter XLc7000, its first automated cutter designed in the U.S. and manufactured in China.

James S. Arthurs, Chairman of Gerber Technology and President Asia-Pacific of Gerber Scientific Inc., introduced Gerber Technology’s newest offering in automation technology. “After more than three years of preparation, including beta testing with five customers in China over the past nine months, we are pleased to begin manufacturing cutters in China,” he stated. “Our efforts have provided very good conditions for a smooth start to production and reaffirms our commitment to Chinese manufacturers as they strive to meet the demands of the growing domestic and export markets.”

Helen Wei, supply chain director of Gerber Scientific (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., introduced the assembly center to visitors where they were given a view of the entire manufacturing process. The center meets Gerber’s production standards, including storage, assembly, testing, safety, delivery and office areas. It is Gerber’s first cutter assembly base in China.

The largest manufacturer specializing in precision grinders and precision measuring instruments in China, SMTW is pleased to partner with Gerber. Mr. Miao Ying, general manager, SMTW, said, “As a world-class CNC company, Gerber Technology is the leading manufacturer of automatic cutters. We designed and established the newly built facility according to Gerber’s requirements for manufacturing. We are confident that we can help Gerber produce competitive products with the high quality for which Gerber is known.”

The GERBERcutter XLc7000 is designed with apparel manufacturers in growth markets who are looking for value-priced solutions that offer exceptional reliability and performance in mind. The XLc7000 offers low cost of ownership, superb accuracy and exceptional ease of use. The XLc7000 cuts up to 7.0 cm of compressed material – accommodating a wide variety of fabric types and material widths up to 2.0 meters. Its intelligent variable vacuum system holds materials securely in place during the cutting process resulting in cut parts that are accurate ply to ply. Gerber's unique Knife Intelligence also maintains accuracy from top ply to bottom ply by sensing and compensating for any deflection of the knife caused by cutting difficult materials or high-ply spreads.
